Over the weekend, we heard the tragic news of a distinguished Tongan human rights activist whose life was tragically taken away.
We share our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to our friends and partners in Tonga and the wider Pacific LGBTQI community on the untimely demise of Polikalepo Kefu (Poli).
The Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN) was honored to work with Poli, in facilitating health dialogues and access for gender and sexual miniroties in Tonga, during his tenure as President of the Tonga Leitis’ Association [TLA]. For over 10 years, TLA has been a strong advocate and partner of APTN in advocating for the rights and equality of Leitis, trans and gender diverse people in Tonga and the Pacific region.
Poli was a staunch humanitarian advocate for the LGBTQI community and people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions. He was highly appreciated by many as a devoted individual, warm-hearted friend, brilliant colleague, a brave warrior and a fearless leader.

We are one with the Pacific community, family and friends of Poli in this difficult moment.
We have been deeply touched by Poli’s commitment, dedication, and service to the community. No words can adequately express our sadness and we honor his memory by dedicating ourselves in supporting TLA, and community partners in Tonga and the Pacific in continuing his legacy, and eliminating hate and systemic oppression faced by the LGBTQI community and people with diverse SOGIESC.
May his soul rest in power!
