The Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN) hereby makes this solidarity statement to express our unwavering support for the LGBTIQ+ community in Indonesia. We condemn the alarming levels of harassment, violence, and discrimination that continue to target local activists and community members.
Indonesia emerged as an independent nation founded on the principles of plurality, encompassing various aspects such as culture, ethnicity, religion, and race. These diverse elements formed the bedrock of the Indonesian Republic, as enshrined in the solemn oath of “Soempah Pemoeda” in 1928. This commitment to pluralism and inclusivity is further encapsulated in their national motto, “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika,” which translates to “Unity in Diversity”. Any acts that propagate hatred and intolerance towards the LGBTIQ+ community undermine the very essence of this pledge.
It is of utmost importance to safeguard and uphold the rights of all LGBTIQ+ individuals, and to respect their presence and contributions. We firmly advocate for a society that embraces diversity and cherishes the intrinsic worth of every person, irrespective of their SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sexual Characteristics). By fostering inclusivity, we can ensure the protection and well-being of all members of society, in line with the fundamental principles on which Indonesia was established.
We deeply regret to acknowledge the recent hostile incidents surrounding the ASEAN Queer Advocacy Week. We express our utmost concern and outrage regarding the numerous threatening actions, including acts of cyber violence and death threats, that have been directed towards LGBTIQ+ people organizing and participating in this event. Additionally, we strongly denounce the targeted harassment of a team member of the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus and Arus Pelangi.
In light of these distressing events, we want to emphasize our solidarity not only with the LGBTIQ community in Indonesia but also with all LGBTIQ+ communities across Southeast Asia. We stand united in our collective pursuit of a better future and an inclusive movement that recognizes and respects the rights and dignity of every individual.
Let LGBTIQA+ community work together to build a society where everyone can live freely and authentically, without fear of discrimination or violence. The Asia Pacific Transgender Network stands firmly by the side of our Indonesian and Southeast Asian LGBTIQ+ siblings, dedicated to creating a more equitable and just world for all.
In solidarity,
Asia Pacific Transgender Network
