Young trans advocates from all over Asia Pacific joins APTN for transformative capacity building workshop

In a transformative five-day workshop titled “Trans Rights Now!”, passionate young activists from across the Asia Pacific converged to amplify their voices and strategies in the pursuit of transgender rights. The event, held from November 13th to 17th, served as a platform for individuals dedicated to advocating for transgender rights in their respective countries.

Participants immersed themselves in a series of workshops aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding trans rights advocacy. The sessions were designed to empower activists with essential tools and knowledge to propel their advocacy efforts forward. Participants were also invited to network with each other,

The workshops encompassed diverse themes, allowing attendees to delve into various facets of advocacy:

1. Assessing Trans Rights Across Asia Pacific: Participants engaged in extensive discussions to examine and exchange insights about the state of transgender rights in their home countries. This exchange of experiences not only shed light on the challenges faced but also inspired innovative solutions and strategies. There was also a panel discussion featuring activists from five different countries to share their realities as Trans Human Rights Defenders in their own countries.

2. Navigating International Advocacy Spaces: The workshops delved into the significance of regional and international platforms, including UN Human Rights Mechanism, International and regional SDGs Monitoring, and Commission on the Status of Women. Experts from esteemed organisations such as Umyra Ahmad from AWID, Omair Paul from ILGA Asia, and Helen Nolan, an expert on UN Human Rights Mechanisms, were invited to elaborate on the process and how they have interacted with it. Participants learned how to leverage these platforms effectively to advance trans rights on a larger scale.

3. Mental health and Well-being: Beyond the enriching workshops, the event also prioritized the well-being of participants. Yoga and deep relaxation sessions were held daily at the workshop. In the middle of the training sequence, Activists were encouraged to retreat at a serene campsite for moments of internal reflection and engage in deep listening practices, nurturing their mental health in the process.

4. Harnessing the Power of Storytelling: Led by Bonni Rambatan, the Editorial Manager of New Naratif, participants were invited to learn about how personal stories can drive change and contribute to building successful advocacy campaigns. The significance of impactful storytelling was emphasized, imparting skills on crafting compelling narratives.

5. Fundraising and Grant Efforts: Understanding the importance of financial support, attendees were equipped with knowledge on fundraising strategies and grant applications tailored specifically for trans rights initiatives. Facilitators from Global Philanthropic Project, Mauro Cabral Grinspan, and AJWS, Jabulani Pereira  joined and shared their knowledge and expertise to attendees. Empowering activists with these skills aims to sustain and expand their advocacy endeavors.

The “Trans Rights Now!” workshop served as a beacon of hope and solidarity, fostering a global network of empowered activists poised to drive substantive change in the fight for transgender rights worldwide. As these individuals return to their communities, they carry with them not just knowledge but a renewed sense of purpose and determination to effect positive change.
