Migrant, Refugee and Asylum
Around the Asia Pacific, trans and gender diverse people face abuse, arbitrary arrest, extortion, violence, severe discrimination and lack of official protection because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Many feel compelled to flee their homes, seeking safety in another country.
Displacement may provide an opportunity for them to express a profoundly felt personal aspect of their identity that has not been possible or allowed in their country of origin. However, safety and protection are often elusive in these other countries too. Trans and gender diverse people who are forced migrants frequently endure unacceptable and incomprehensible treatment.
APTN research sheds light on the lived reality of the trans and gender diverse community in Asia and the Pacific, including the discrimination and human rights violations they face.
